Description
Juliana Hall’s song ‘OLD’ was commissioned in the Fall of 2021 by mezzo-soprano Kara Dugan as part of her WQXR Artist Propulsion Lab member project called ‘In a New York Minute,’ in which five female composers were commissioned to set texts created by New York City poets that would each become one song within a short five-song cycle. The haiku set by Hall in ‘OLD’ was taken from a collection of writings by poet Christina Kelly called “Quarantine Bitch” that was sent through community poetry submissions to the Gothamist (owned by WNYC, the talk radio sister site to classical music station WQXR). The project resulted in a song cycle comprised of five one-minute songs that aim to promote female voices while endeavoring to represent our collective experience of transitioning out of pandemic life. In addition to “OLD” by Juliana Hall, “In a New York Minute” is comprised of “RSVP” by Justine F. Chen, “Emergence” by Emily Cooley, “Softly Broken” by Carrie Magin, and “Can I Hold Your Hand” by Nailah Nombeko.
